“On a crisp August Sunday morning, Megan Puls held her wheel throwing workshop. Despite the chilly weather up to 12 keen potters, from far & wide, ( a crew from Stanthorpe) gathered at the Benowa studios, to watch a demonstration workshop, run by Megan Puls. It included recycle and re-use, coloring clay, incense burners, oil bottles, tea and noodle bowls And lots more

We all sat in anticipation, as Megan displayed her incredible creative ability, to transform clay into beautiful pieces of art, while all the time making it look effortless. Megan showed us a range of techniques on the wheel from stackthrowing large pieces of clay, to making the most delicate and intricate creations. Pieces similar from her Landline exhibition were also demonstrated.

Megan is an inspirational & fun teacher & kept us entertained with great stories, while demonstrating her techniques. Lunch was al-fresco on the front lawn under the shady trees, the potters showed off their culinary skills with wonderful scrumptious fresh creations.

The workshop continued after lunch, Megan showed us some handy hints on turning and very simple decorative techniques this taught us that less is really best. Megan shared her time, knowledge and passion for the love of clay. Thank-you Megan, it was a terrific workshop.”

The painter often made the interior of her exuberant home in Duxford Street the subject of her still-life works. Those that have been to my home know my style and Margaret’s home was filled with similar eccentricities. Things she loved, and things she painted. With its flowers, fruit, vases, books and antiques, the over-flowing house has long been a mecca for Sydney’s artists, bohemians and intellectuals.

As well as being a prolific artist, Olley has also been one of the most-painted figures in Australian art. Her portrait by Ben Quilty won this year’s Archibald Prize. William Dobell’s portrait of her won the prize in 1948. Russell Drysdale, Donald Friend, Jeffrey Smart and Judy Cassab have also painted Olley.

She was an independent woman who never married or had children. It was not a role she was cut out for, she said. She once described herself as “a one-woman band, too independent to be subservient to anyone”. Asked to describe her body of work once she replied: “I never see myself fitting in anywhere. I just like to lose myself in the work, let the painting take over.” I hope you have more of that wherever you are now Margaret!
