August 2010

The Gold Coast Potters annual Members exhibition was held recently. I am thoroughly chuffed that I was the overall winner with my Obsidian series pots. Thanks to all. Here is a selection of my work on their website.

Also, here is Kevin Grealy’s (the judge) comments on why he chose the piece. It is interesting to see how he came to his conclusion based on a feeling. I always say art should be felt not thought.

“Firstly, thank you to Gold Coast Potters Society for inviting me to judge your 2010 members exhibition. Your group is to be congratulated for the high standard of work both aesthetically and technically, and for the wide variety of approaches to and methods for making interesting things from clay that was later fired to permanency.”

OVERALL WINNER. No 44 “Obsidian”.

Any of the groups in this series could have won the award…I was drawn to this particular group by its sense of play. remember as a child playing on the water’s edge, squeezing fistsful of wet sand into tall, narrow sand castles…until they collapsed! Now look at No.44 and relive it again.

Kevin Grealys` comment was so perceptive on your winning entry Megan.

I have only to close my eyes to relive the sense of scooping up wet sand, heavy with water and extruding it through pliable fingers to see how tall my tower could grow.

Your pots are much more permanent and will continue to charm when all the sand castles have washed away.

    Megan,
Congratulations on your marvellous win at the Member’s Exhibition. Your work is really an inspiration to us all, and for me to practice more.
